On Tuesday (December 16, 2025), a significant milestone was achieved as India and Ethiopia established a new strategic partnership. Prime Minister Narendra Modi engaged with Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali to explore enhanced collaboration in vital sectors such as economy, technology, defence, health, and education.
During their discussions, PM Modi revealed plans to double scholarships available for Ethiopian students in India, while thanking Ethiopia for its backing in India's counter-terrorism efforts.
In response, PM Ali noted India's status as the largest foreign investor in Ethiopia, with more than 615 Indian firms operating in the nation. Both leaders underscored their mutual interests and the importance of South-South cooperation, foreseeing new avenues for development for both countries.
PM Modi also immersed himself in Ethiopia's vibrant culture, taking part in a traditional coffee ceremony and touring Friendship Park and the Science Museum. He received an enthusiastic welcome from the Indian community in Addis Ababa.
On December 17, PM Modi is scheduled to address Ethiopia’s Parliament, discussing the importance of the India-Ethiopia partnership and its implications for the Global South. This visit is part of a broader three-nation tour that includes Jordan and Oman.
