India Unveils First Vande Bharat Sleeper Train

Post by : Mina Rahman

On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched India’s inaugural Vande Bharat sleeper train, establishing a vital link between Howrah, near Kolkata, and Kamakhya Junction in Guwahati. This modern overnight service aims to enhance connectivity between West Bengal and Assam, with both states gearing up for electoral contests.

The service was ceremoniously inaugurated from Malda Town in West Bengal, while the virtual flag-off for the return trip was conducted from Guwahati to Howrah.

Tailored to accommodate the rising travel demands, the entirely air-conditioned Vande Bharat sleeper train ensures an airline-like travel experience at competitive prices. It significantly cuts down travel time on the Howrah–Guwahati route by approximately 2.5 hours, promoting religious tourism in the area.

Designed to achieve speeds of up to 180 km/h, the train operates comfortably at 120-130 km/h. It showcases ergonomic berths and a superior suspension system for a smoother journey. Utilizing advanced disinfectant technology, it effectively eliminates 99% of germs, with fresh linens and towels provided to passengers. Safety enhancements include the indigenous Kavach automatic protection system alongside onboard surveillance. Automatic sliding doors remain locked when in transit and open exclusively at stations.

Passengers can indulge in local delicacies included in their tickets: Assamese cuisine on the journey from Kamakhya to Howrah, and Bengali specialties on the return leg.

Ticket prices vary between Rs 2,300 to Rs 3,600 based on the chosen class of travel. This new service represents a significant leap in India’s railway modernization, blending speed, safety, comfort, and regional culinary offerings for travelers.
