YouTube Launches New Tool to Help Parents Control Kids’ Shorts Watching Time

Post by : Saif Nasser

YouTube has introduced a new feature that allows parents and young users to better manage the time spent watching YouTube Shorts. Shorts are short and fast videos that are very popular among children and teenagers. Many parents have raised concerns that endless scrolling keeps kids glued to screens for long hours, affecting their studies, sleep, and outdoor activities. This update is meant to address those worries in a simple and practical way.

The new tool allows users to set a daily time limit for watching Shorts. Once the chosen time is reached, YouTube shows a reminder on the screen that the daily limit has been completed. This reminder does not block the app completely, but it creates a pause that encourages users to think before continuing. The idea is to build awareness rather than force strict control.

Parents can set up this limit easily using the YouTube mobile app. After opening the app, they can go to the settings section and select the option to manage the Shorts feed. From there, they can choose how much time their child is allowed to spend watching Shorts each day. YouTube then tracks the viewing time automatically.

This feature is especially helpful for children who often lose track of time while watching short videos. Because Shorts are designed to be quick and engaging, one video often leads to another without any clear stopping point. The daily limit reminder helps break this cycle and supports healthier digital habits.

The update is currently available on YouTube’s mobile apps and can be used by both parents and adults who want to control their own screen time. It reflects a growing effort by tech companies to focus on digital wellbeing instead of only increasing user engagement.

For families, this tool can also open the door to better conversations about responsible internet use. It helps children understand that while online entertainment is fun, balance is important. Time for studies, family, rest, and play matters just as much as time spent on a screen.
