US Military Strike Claims Lives of 47 Venezuelan Troops in Caracas

Post by : Mina Rahman

In a significant escalation of conflict in Latin America, a US military operation has resulted in the deaths of 47 Venezuelan troops, including nine women, as reported by Venezuela's government. The Defence Ministry updated the death toll, indicating these fatalities were among those opposing the raid that aimed to oust President Nicolás Maduro.

The incident also led to the death of 32 Cuban soldiers, who were in Venezuela on military duties linked to their alliance with Maduro's administration. Public mourning ceremonies have been conducted in Cuba for these fallen soldiers, as their remains have been sent back to Havana.

Venezuelan officials indicated that over 112 individuals were injured during the assault, which commenced with aerial bombardments on military establishments, culminating in US forces executing a helicopter landing attempt to apprehend Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores, at their home in Caracas. Information on civilian casualties is still forthcoming as DNA identification processes are ongoing.

Responses to the event have been diverse, with major protests erupting outside the US Embassy in Havana, where thousands gathered to decry the deaths of Cuban personnel. Cuban President Miguel Díaz‑Canel characterized the military action as an aggressive act, reaffirming his commitment to resisting political concessions in discussions with the United States.

In the wake of the operation, interim President Delcy Rodríguez of Venezuela declared a seven-day period of mourning and engaged in high-level discussions with the CIA director regarding economic collaboration and security challenges following the crisis.

The US operation, which has reportedly placed Maduro in custody facing drug-related allegations, has heightened diplomatic tensions and elicited mixed international reactions, including calls for constructive dialogue and regional peace.
