Yemen’s long-running political crisis has taken a new turn after the country’s anti-Houthi leadership removed a powerful southern separatist leader from his position. The decision has exposed deep divisions within the group that governs areas not controlled by the Houthi rebels and has raised concerns about stability in the war-torn nation.
The move was announced by Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, the internationally recognized authority that was created to unite forces fighting the Houthis. Officials said the separatist leader acted against national interests by making unilateral military decisions and weakening cooperation among allied groups. They accused him of challenging the authority of the central leadership at a time when unity is crucial.
The removed leader heads the Southern Transitional Council, a group that controls large parts of southern Yemen and seeks independence for the region. Although the group opposes the Houthis, it has long disagreed with the government over the future shape of Yemen. This clash of goals has caused repeated tensions, even among allies.
Political analysts say the decision highlights how fragile Yemen’s anti-Houthi alliance has become. While all sides oppose the Houthis, disagreements over power, territory, and governance continue to block progress. Regional influence has also played a role, with Saudi Arabia supporting a united Yemen and the United Arab Emirates maintaining close ties with southern forces.
The latest development could weaken efforts to negotiate an end to the war, which has lasted for more than a decade. The conflict has killed tens of thousands of people and pushed millions into hunger and poverty. Aid agencies warn that political infighting diverts attention from urgent humanitarian needs, including food shortages, healthcare collapse, and lack of basic services.
Experts caution that internal divisions may benefit the Houthis, who remain firmly in control of large northern areas, including the capital Sanaa. Any breakdown among rival anti-Houthi groups could reduce pressure on the rebels and prolong the conflict.
For ordinary Yemenis, the news brings more uncertainty. Many citizens say they are exhausted by power struggles and want leaders to focus on peace, reconstruction, and daily survival needs rather than political rivalries. Without compromise and trust among Yemen’s leaders, hopes for stability and recovery remain distant.
