Trump Asks Putin to Pause Kyiv Strikes as Peace Talks Near

Post by : Saif Nasser

A new diplomatic development has emerged in the long-running war between Russia and Ukraine. According to the Kremlin, U.S. President Donald Trump personally asked Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt air strikes on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, until February 1. The request was made to help create a calm and positive environment ahead of important peace negotiations.

The statement came from Kremlin officials on Friday. They confirmed that President Putin received the request from President Trump. However, the Kremlin did not say whether Russia agreed to the request. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov refused to give more details when asked by reporters, keeping Russia’s final position unclear.

This request comes at a critical time. The war has caused heavy damage to Ukraine’s cities, homes, and energy systems. During winter, attacks on power stations and heating facilities are especially dangerous. Millions of people depend on electricity and heating to survive the freezing temperatures.

Ukraine has responded cautiously but positively to the news. Ukrainian officials said that if Russia stops attacking Kyiv and avoids strikes on energy infrastructure, Ukraine is willing to do the same. This shows that both sides may be open to temporary restraint, at least to protect civilians during the harsh winter period.

Peace talks are also approaching. The next round of discussions involving Russia, Ukraine, and the United States is planned for Sunday. The talks were expected to take place in Abu Dhabi. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said the date or location could still change. This uncertainty shows how fragile and sensitive the peace process remains.

President Trump’s involvement highlights the role of the United States as a key player in efforts to reduce violence. By asking for a pause in strikes, Washington appears to be pushing for confidence-building steps before negotiations begin. Such pauses, even if temporary, can help reduce civilian suffering and open the door for serious dialogue.

At the same time, there is reason for caution. Past attempts at ceasefires or pauses in fighting have often failed. Trust between Russia and Ukraine is very low after years of conflict. Any agreement to halt attacks would need clear commitments and close monitoring to succeed.

Still, this request signals a possible shift toward diplomacy. If Russia agrees to pause strikes and Ukraine responds in kind, it could mark a small but meaningful step toward reducing the violence. For ordinary people in Ukraine, even a short break from attacks could mean warmth, safety, and hope during the coldest months of the year.

The world will now be watching closely. The outcome of the upcoming talks, and Russia’s response to Trump’s request, may shape the next phase of the conflict. While peace is still far away, efforts like these show that dialogue has not completely disappeared.
