U.S. federal authorities have arrested an Iranian-American woman in Los Angeles on charges of trafficking weapons to several African nations on behalf of Iran.
The individual, identified as Shamim Mafi, was detained at Los Angeles International Airport on April 19, 2026. She stands accused of orchestrating sales of various military hardware, including drones, explosives, and substantial amounts of ammunition.
Prosecutors allege that Mafi collaborated with a co-conspirator through a firm named Atlas International to facilitate these illicit arms transactions. Investigations suggest these dealings may have happened across various locations, including California. A significant contract reportedly involved supplying Iranian-made drones to Sudan’s defense ministry, with a valuation exceeding €60 million.
Authorities assert that Mafi profited significantly from organizing meetings and travel for these deals, claiming she earned millions in the process. Furthermore, the complaint outlines her extensive travel history among countries like Turkey, Oman, and Iran, where she previously resided in Istanbul.
Since becoming a lawful permanent resident in 2016, Mafi has maintained robust ties with foreign entities. Investigators are currently reviewing her past allegations, notably those suggesting her ex-husband had connections to Iran’s intelligence services.
This case is particularly sensitive amid the ongoing turmoil in Sudan, which has escalated into widespread violence and humanitarian crises since 2023. U.S. officials consider the alleged weapon shipments a grave threat, potentially exacerbating regional instability.
Mafi has been formally charged and could face a potential penalty of up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Her initial court appearance in Los Angeles is anticipated soon.
The investigation is ongoing, with authorities hinting that more information about additional individuals possibly involved may surface as the case unfolds.
