Kim Jong Un Oversees Memorial Sculptures for North Korean Soldiers Killed Abroad

Post by : Saif Nasser

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un visited an art studio on Sunday to supervise the creation of sculptures for a memorial dedicated to soldiers who died fighting overseas. State media said the leader emphasized that the sculptures would honor the “legendary feats” of these soldiers and keep their memory alive.

The memorial commemorates troops sent under a military pact with Russia. In 2024, North Korea reportedly deployed around 14,000 soldiers to support Russian forces in Ukraine. Estimates suggest that more than 6,000 of these soldiers lost their lives. Kim has frequently praised their courage, personally decorating soldiers and supporting memorial projects to recognize their service.

The visit comes as North Korea prepares for its Ninth Party Congress, expected early next month. This congress is likely to outline the country’s main policies for the next five years and could include a large military parade. Observers note that the memorial work and upcoming congress highlight North Korea’s focus on military loyalty, national pride, and strong internal unity.

By highlighting the sacrifice of soldiers abroad, Kim reinforces a narrative of heroism and dedication to the state. The memorial project also serves as a reminder of the country’s international military alliances and its emphasis on honoring those who serve the nation.

This initiative reflects how North Korea continues to connect its identity to military achievements, loyalty to the ruling party, and recognition of soldiers’ contributions, particularly during times of conflict abroad.
