Iranian Oil Tanker Redirects Course from India to China

Post by : Shakul

An Iranian crude oil tanker has unexpectedly adjusted its course from India, now heading towards China, bringing to light the potential for renewed oil trade between India and Iran. The vessel, known as Ping Shun, was originally bound for Vadinar Port in Gujarat, which would have marked a significant resumption of Iranian oil imports to India after nearly seven years.

Data from ship-tracking revealed that the Aframax tanker, currently under US sanctions, carrying approximately 600,000 barrels, switched its destination to Dongying in China just prior to entering Indian waters. It had been en route to India for around three days before the course change near the Gujarat shoreline.

Market analysts suggest this abrupt alteration is related to concerns around payment terms, as sellers tighten financial conditions, moving away from extended credit and demanding quicker or immediate payments. This scenario complicates transactions for buyers, including Indian refiners.

The specific identities of the involved buyer and seller in this shipment remain undisclosed. Additionally, analysts have pointed out that destination signals in a ship's tracking system can be altered at any point, allowing for the possibility of redirection based on changing commercial circumstances.

After halting imports of Iranian crude in 2019 due to stricter US sanctions, India previously relied heavily on Iranian oil for its competitive pricing and refinery compatibility. This latest shift underscores the ongoing influence of geopolitical and financial challenges on global oil trading.
