China’s Xi Promotes “Multipolar World” During Meeting With Uruguay’s President

Post by : Saif Nasser

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for stronger cooperation between China and Uruguay to help build what he described as an “equal and orderly multipolar world.” His comments came during a meeting with Uruguay’s President Yamandu Orsi in Beijing on Tuesday.

The talks highlighted China’s efforts to deepen ties with countries in South America at a time when global politics are becoming more divided. President Xi said both nations should work together to support fair global development and a more balanced international system where no single power dominates.

President Orsi’s visit is seen as important for both countries. He is the first South American leader to visit Beijing since recent major global events that have increased tensions between world powers. His trip sends a signal that China and Latin American nations are still interested in strong diplomatic and economic engagement.

During the meeting, Xi spoke about the need for inclusive global economic growth that benefits all countries. He repeated China’s long-standing message of building a shared future through cooperation rather than conflict. According to Chinese media, Xi said such partnerships are key to global stability.

Uruguay’s president said his visit aims to raise his country’s global profile and bring new opportunities for investment and development. He shared that message on social media shortly after arriving in China. Orsi is leading a large delegation of around 150 people, including business leaders, showing the strong economic focus of the trip.

The visit will last until February 7 and includes stops in major Chinese cities such as Shanghai, the country’s financial and commercial hub. Meetings with companies and officials are expected to focus on trade, investment, and long-term cooperation.

China is already Uruguay’s largest export destination. Uruguay sends products such as soybeans, beef, and wood pulp to China. In return, it imports machinery, electronics, and chemicals. In the first half of 2025, Uruguay recorded a trade surplus of over $187 million with China.

Experts say the timing of Orsi’s visit is meaningful for Beijing. It shows that South American countries remain open to working with China even as global political divisions grow sharper. China has also hosted several Western leaders this year, reflecting its active diplomacy on multiple fronts.

The meeting between Xi and Orsi underlines China’s goal of expanding its influence through trade and dialogue. For Uruguay, it represents a chance to strengthen economic ties and gain new growth opportunities in a changing world.
