A comprehensive study has disclosed that merely 14.7 percent of Malaysians aged over 60 are deemed to be “ageing well”, triggering significant concerns regarding the nation's healthcare frameworks and the support infrastructure dedicated to the elderly.
These results stem from the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2025, a significant government-supported initiative assessing the physical, mental, and social wellness of senior citizens throughout Malaysia. Health Minister Dzulkefly Ahmad characterized the findings as a “call to action,” highlighting the urgent need for enhancements in the quality of life for older adults.
Conducted from July to September 2025, the survey polled over 7,500 individuals and achieved a response rate exceeding 70 percent. This is the second examination concentrating specifically on those aged 60 and above, following a similar inquiry in 2018.
With an estimated 4.1 million individuals belonging to this demographic, Malaysia is on track to become an ageing society by 2036. Experts caution that without robust policies and enhanced healthcare provisions, the difficulties connected to an ageing population are likely to escalate.
The definition of “ageing well” encompasses more than just physical health; it also considers autonomy, mental well-being, financial stability, and social engagement. The low figures indicate that numerous elderly Malaysians struggle to sustain a satisfactory quality of life.
The Ministry of Health has asserted that the insights gleaned from this study will inform future policy-making and bolster support networks for the elderly. A more comprehensive report is anticipated in the upcoming months, offering greater clarity on the challenges confronting Malaysia’s ageing populace.
This research emphasizes the pressing need for holistic approaches, including improved access to healthcare, community initiatives, and long-term care strategies, to ensure that a larger segment of Malaysians can age with dignity and health.
