HANOI: Rescue operations in Vietnam are in full swing as more than a dozen individuals remain missing following a week of catastrophic flooding that has already claimed at least 55 lives, local officials confirmed on Saturday (Nov 22). The deluge has ravaged multiple provinces in south-central Vietnam, leading to significant destruction and forcing residents to evacuate from submerged homes and precarious, landslide-prone areas.
Since the end of October, continuous heavy rainfall has thrashed the region, affecting both well-known tourist spots and remote communities. Coastal cities like Nha Trang saw numerous city blocks completely inundated, while hilly regions near the Da Lat tourist area faced fatal landslides. Reports indicate Dak Lak province, situated in the highlands, as the most severely impacted, with over two dozen confirmed fatalities.
Rescue teams have been actively engaged in saving stranded residents, with some individuals trapped on rooftops and others seeking refuge in treetops as floodwaters engulfed their neighborhoods. Although the waters are beginning to recede, many roads and highways remain inaccessible, leaving several towns isolated. More than 300,000 residents are currently without electricity after an outage that initially impacted over a million people.
The Vietnamese Ministry of the Environment has confirmed the death toll from flooding across six provinces stands at 55, with 13 individuals still unaccounted for. Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, with authorities advising residents to heed safety instructions and stay in secure areas until conditions improve.
Vietnam has experienced an uptick in natural disasters, with officials attributing the increase in extreme weather to climate change. National statistics indicate that between January and October of this year, floods, storms, and other calamities have resulted in 279 people dead or missing and caused upwards of $2 billion in damages nationwide.
Government officials are collaborating closely with local authorities and disaster response teams to deliver emergency supplies, including food, water, and temporary housing to the affected regions. Residents are being evacuated from high-risk areas to mitigate the threat of additional landslides and flash floods.
The recurrent flooding has raised alarms regarding the long-term repercussions on Vietnam's infrastructure, agriculture, and tourism industries. Authorities are keeping a close eye on weather patterns, anticipating further rain in certain regions over the coming days.
Vietnamese leaders have called on citizens to remain vigilant and follow emergency protocols, underscoring the importance of community cooperation in minimizing fatalities and property damage.
