In an electrifying display, Paris Saint-Germain triumphed over Bayern Munich with a 5-4 scoreline in the initial leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final, setting a record for the highest-scoring semi-final first leg in the tournament’s history at Parc des Princes, Paris.
Both teams pushed aggressively, showcasing relentless attacking play along with fast-paced counterattacks and a series of controversial moments that kept fans on the edge of their seats ahead of the highly anticipated second leg in Munich. Despite gaining a comfortable lead, PSG weathered a strong comeback from Bayern to head into the return match with just a one-goal advantage.
Bayern started strongly, taking the lead in the 17th minute through a penalty converted by Harry Kane, awarded after a foul on Luis Díaz by PSG defender Willian Pacho. Kane expertly sent goalkeeper Matvey Safonov diving the wrong way for his 13th goal of the tournament.
PSG struck back swiftly as Khvicha Kvaratskhelia netted the equalizer with a magnificent curling shot from the left flank, consistently troubling Bayern's backline with his pace and skill throughout the match.
The home side then took the lead when midfielder João Neves scored a header from a corner, showcasing resilience against Bayern’s defensive efforts. Nevertheless, Bayern equalized again thanks to Michael Olise, who capped off a blistering attack to make it 2-2.
Just before half-time, PSG regained the advantage when the referee awarded them a penalty after reviewing a handball by Bayern's Alphonso Davies. Despite strong protests, Ousmane Dembélé converted from the spot, bringing the score to 3-2 at the break.
With their momentum, PSG expanded their lead in the second half; Kvaratskhelia netted his second following a swift counterattack, and shortly after, Dembélé scored again after a well-placed assist from Désiré Doué, pushing PSG ahead to a 5-2 lead.
However, Bayern refused to be subdued. Dayot Upamecano scored with a header from a Joshua Kimmich free kick, followed by Luis Díaz’s impressive goal that narrowed the score to 5-4, injecting new life into Bayern’s quest.
The closing moments were nervy, with Bayern seeking an equalizer while PSG struggled defensively. Crucially, Willian Pacho made a last-minute clearance to deny Bayern a dramatic fifth goal.
Post-match, PSG head coach Luis Enrique described the encounter as one of the most high-intensity games of his career, lauding both teams for their offensive display amidst the considerable physical and emotional strain.
On the other hand, Bayern's coach Vincent Kompany expressed confidence in his squad's ability to reverse the outcome at Allianz Arena, vowing to stick to their attacking strategy in the return leg.
With the semi-final finely poised for next week’s decisive clash in Munich, fans can expect further fireworks, as PSG seeks a spot in the Champions League final while Bayern aims for a comeback.
The victor will earn a place in the Champions League final on May 30 in Budapest.
