The Biden administration is ramping up pressure on Ukraine to agree to a proposed peace agreement aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. Sources indicate that Washington has cautioned Kyiv that it might reduce intelligence sharing and military support if there’s a refusal to engage with the new terms.
The discussions took place in Kyiv, where senior US officials held talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky during a critical juncture. The US has urged Ukraine to consider the peace framework by next Thursday.
The suggested agreement includes a comprehensive 28-point plan from Washington that accommodates several demands from Russia, such as the relinquishment of additional territory, a reduction in military size, and a commitment to stay outside of NATO.
Sources reveal that this marks the most considerable pressure the US has exerted on Ukraine regarding peace negotiations. Officials expressed urgency for a swift resolution, emphasizing that Ukraine might have to make “challenging concessions” to facilitate a quicker end to the hostilities.
Kyiv is expected to respond to the framework rapidly, with American officials labeling the timeline as “assertive.”
The US initiative reportedly insists that Ukraine must:
Surrender more contested territories to Russia
Limit the size of its military forces
Agree to abstain from NATO membership
Establish a new security arrangement with the US
In exchange, Ukraine would benefit from long-term security assurances and ongoing international support.
President Zelensky engaged with the visiting US delegation about the proposal. While some US officials deemed the meeting “fruitful,” there is growing anxiety in Ukraine over potential pressure to accept terms that might jeopardize its long-term security.
The message from Washington was direct: failure to agree promptly may lead to reduced military and intelligence support for Ukraine.
Ukraine now finds itself at a pivotal moment; agreeing to the proposal could pave the way for a resolution to the conflict, while refusal risked estranging its vital military ally.
