The Pentagon has confirmed that the US military executed a strike on a suspected drug-smuggling boat in the Caribbean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
Ordered by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, this operation targeted a vessel in international waters linked to a designated terrorist group. US Southern Command reported that intelligence indicated the boat was transporting illegal narcotics along a well-known trafficking route in the Eastern Pacific.
This incident has drawn increased scrutiny over the Trump administration's persistent efforts to combat drug trafficking. In a prior event, a similar vessel was struck multiple times, leading to debates on whether such actions could be classified as extrajudicial killings or violations of international law, especially given the established prohibitions against attacking unarmed or incapacitated persons.
During congressional testimony, Admiral Frank “Mitch” Bradley denied any intention to kill all individuals aboard the targeted vessel, while lawmakers presented conflicting narratives regarding the briefings surrounding the incident. Human rights organizations have previously deemed past strikes as extrajudicial executions, and families affected have lodged complaints about violations of the right to life.
The US military's campaign has reportedly resulted in over 80 fatalities of alleged drug traffickers in recent months, part of a larger initiative the administration describes as a battle against “narco-terrorists.” These military actions correspond with a heightened US military posture near Venezuela amid escalating tensions between Washington and Caracas regarding potential military interventions.
