Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya has marked a significant milestone in T20 international cricket by surpassing the legendary Yuvraj Singh. Hardik now boasts the record for the most instances by an Indian player to score a half-century while also taking at least one wicket in the same T20I match. This remarkable feat was accomplished during the fifth and final T20I against South Africa. His performance further solidifies his status as one of India’s premier all-rounders in T20 cricket.
Playing with remarkable confidence, Hardik entered the game after India had already established a solid foundation, thanks to explosive performances from Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma. Teaming up with Tilak Varma, Hardik unleashed an aggressive assault on the South African bowlers right from the start, demonstrating power and finesse in his shots. His innings was characterized by explosive fours and sixes that put immense pressure on the South African bowling lineup.
He scored 63 runs off merely 25 balls, hitting five fours and five sixes, which underscored the destructive nature of his innings with a strike rate of 252. Although he conceded 41 runs in his three overs, his pivotal wicket of Dewald Brevis, who scored 31 from 17 balls, helped India regain control at a crucial moment in the match.
This game represented Hardik's fourth occasion of achieving a half-century and securing a wicket in a T20I, placing him ahead of Yuvraj Singh, who managed this feat three times. Virat Kohli is also notable on this list, having performed this twice in T20 World Cup matches against Pakistan in 2012 and West Indies in 2016. All-rounder Shivam Dube has replicated this accomplishment twice as well.
Marking his return to international cricket, Hardik delivered noteworthy performances throughout the series. He concluded as the third-highest run-scorer, amassing 142 runs across three innings with an impressive average of 71, alongside a strike rate of 186.84. He also recorded two half-centuries in matches that India won, and took three wickets during the series, showcasing his capacity to make impactful contributions despite a slightly elevated economy rate.
In the match, South Africa opted to field after winning the toss. India’s openers set a brisk pace, accumulating 63 runs in just 5.4 overs, with Sanju Samson scoring 37 off 22 balls, while Abhishek Sharma added 34 from 21. Following the quick dismissals of Samson and captain Suryakumar Yadav, India found stability through a brilliant partnership of 105 runs between Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya. Tilak contributed a composed 73 runs from 42 balls, enabling India to post a strong total of 231 for 5.
In pursuit of 232, South Africa began solidly, forming a 69-run opening partnership, led by Quinton de Kock’s 65 off 35 balls. However, after Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Reeza Hendricks, India gradually regained control. Despite a spirited innings from Dewald Brevis, South Africa faced a series of wickets, finishing at 201 for 8, falling short by 30 runs.
India’s bowlers were crucial in securing the win. Varun Chakravarthy emerged as the standout performer with four wickets, concluding the series with ten wickets at an impressive average. Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh also played vital roles, with Bumrah taking two wickets and maintaining an economical bowling rate.
In recognition of his all-round performance, Hardik Pandya was named Player of the Match, while Varun Chakravarthy earned the Player of the Series award for his consistent bowling. India clinched the series 3-1, ending on a high and boosting their confidence for upcoming T20 challenges.
