In a recent announcement, the Qatar Racing and Equestrian Club (QREC) confirmed that the Qatar Oaks will now be held on Sunday at the Al Rayyan Racecourse. This decision comes in light of the unexpected rainfall across Qatar, with the safety of horses, jockeys, and all participants being the primary focus. The Qatar International Derby is still set to occur on Saturday, kicking off at 3:00 p.m., while the Qatar Oaks is scheduled to begin at the same time on Sunday.
The QREC has reaffirmed its adherence to the highest safety protocols in alignment with international horse racing standards. Previously, the club indicated that the Qatar International Derby will be conducted on the turf track at Al Rayyan, featuring 10 races with 16 horses participating and a total prize pot of USD 1.3 million. The highlight of the event, the tenth race, offers a lucrative prize of USD 500,000.
The main race, dubbed the Qatar Derby for Purebred Thoroughbreds, is classified as a Group 1 international event tailored for three-year-old horses racing over 2,000 metres. The victor of this prestigious race will secure entry into the Al Shafla race at the upcoming HH The Amir's Sword Festival in February.
QREC emphasized that both the Qatar Oaks and Derby aim to maintain fair competition while upholding the utmost standards of safety for horses and riders, delivering an exhilarating and well-coordinated racing experience for attendees.
