Severe Winter Storm Disrupts Winnipeg: Flights and Transit Challenged

Post by : Mina Rahman

A severe winter storm sweeping through the Prairies has been causing major travel disruptions for residents in Winnipeg on Friday. At Richardson International Airport, passengers are grappling with ongoing flight delays and cancellations for the second day in a row as an Alberta clipper passes through southern Manitoba.

Numerous flights within Canada, including those to Calgary, Toronto, Edmonton, and Vancouver, have been plagued by delays or outright cancellations. Jared and Laura Dennis returned to the airport after a family vacation to Cuba was postponed, only to discover yet another cancellation of their flights. Jared lamented that their first holiday in 12 years felt “ruined.”

Frustration was palpable among passengers regarding last-minute flight cancellations and the inadequate communication from airlines. Fazia Aitzenti, who was also traveling to Cuba, expressed her anger: “I’m really mad… They cancel flights minutes before boarding and don’t even know if we can fly tomorrow.”

The Winnipeg Airports Authority is urging travelers to confirm flight status prior to heading to the airport and to keep up-to-date through their airline's channels.

At the same time, the city dealt with conditions of blowing snow and low visibility. Environment Canada has issued warnings about reduced visibility throughout southern Manitoba, effective through Saturday evening. The City of Winnipeg reported that over 200 buses were immobilized in the snow on Thursday, with an additional 11 buses experiencing similar fates on Friday morning.

Commuters like Mark Travers mentioned significant delays in public transit, asserting that the heavy snowfall complicates travel. Nevertheless, some Winnipeggers are taking it in stride. Gerry Kovalik remarked, “This is the best thing in the world” for drivers with all-wheel or four-wheel drive. Hannah and Brady Hallett, enjoying a walk, noted that extreme weather is simply a part of life in Winnipeg and encouraged others to “get used to it” and “let it snow.”
