From November 18 to 20, the United States and China's military officials conducted “frank and constructive” discussions aimed at maritime security in Hawaii. These talks focused on restoring military communications that have been strained in recent months, organized under the Military Maritime Consultative Agreement (MMCA) working group.
Throughout the discussions, both parties exchanged insights regarding the current maritime and aerial security conditions while revisiting past encounters between US and Chinese naval and air forces to foster professional collaboration and mitigate the risk of accidents.
The Chinese navy expressed discontent over US freedom-of-navigation operations in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea, asserting such movements challenge China’s sovereignty. The US, conversely, raised concerns regarding Chinese military activities in the vicinity of Taiwan and its expanding influence in the South China Sea.
This meeting follows a similar session held in April and marks the return of regular military discussions under US President Donald Trump’s second term. These efforts are geared towards enhancing communication, transparency, and security in areas of close military engagement.
The Pentagon underscored the necessity for ongoing dialogue to improve understanding of China's military improvements, regional strategies, and nuclear program. A follow-up meeting is already in the planning stages for 2026.
These dialogues symbolize gradual efforts by both nations to alleviate misunderstandings in maritime and aviation contexts, uphold regional stability, and avert military confrontations, even amidst ongoing diplomatic and trade challenges.
