Ukraine Peace Talks in Paris Show Progress as Kyiv Protects National Interests

Post by : Saif Nasser

Ukraine has said that peace talks being held in Paris are starting to deliver real results, even though major challenges remain. The discussions focus on ending the war with Russia and ensuring long-term security for Ukraine if a ceasefire is reached.

Kyrylo Budanov, the newly appointed chief of staff to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, said the second day of talks had produced “concrete results.” He explained that not all details could be shared with the public, but assured Ukrainians that the country’s national interests would be fully protected.

Ukraine is meeting with key allies, including the United States and European partners, to discuss security guarantees. Kyiv wants firm commitments that would protect the country from future attacks and help maintain peace after years of conflict.

A major sticking point in the talks is the future of eastern Ukraine’s Donbas region. Russia has demanded that Ukraine give up the area as part of a peace deal. Ukrainian leaders have firmly rejected this idea, saying the region is an important part of the country and cannot be surrendered.

President Zelenskiy said earlier that Ukrainian and U.S. officials had discussed several ideas related to territory, but stressed that land issues remain the biggest obstacle to peace. According to Ukrainian officials, one proposal involved creating a free economic zone in parts of Donbas if Ukraine were to withdraw. Kyiv has not accepted this suggestion.

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed that territorial options were discussed during the Paris meetings and said talks would continue. However, no final agreement has been reached so far.

The Ukrainian government is trying to balance the urgent need for peace with the responsibility to protect its sovereignty. The war has caused heavy damage to cities, the economy, and daily life, making diplomacy essential but also highly sensitive.

For now, Ukrainian officials are cautiously hopeful. They say progress is being made, but any agreement must respect Ukraine’s borders and ensure lasting security for its people.
