In a recent announcement, the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi (EAD), acting under Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan's directives, has officially marked the beginning of the 2026 camel grazing season in Abu Dhabi. This season will take place from April 22 to October 15.
The initiative is part of Law No. (11) of 2020, which aims to govern grazing practices throughout the emirate. This legislation is designed to protect natural pastures, structure traditional practices, and ensure sustainable resource management while honouring camel grazing as a vital cultural custom.
EAD will uphold this law in collaboration with relevant authorities, aiming for a harmonious balance between environmental conservation and community needs.
To facilitate the process, eligible individuals can acquire a grazing licence instantly through the TAMM platform. The cost for a new licence is AED 250, with renewals priced at AED 150.
Prospective licence holders must meet specific criteria:
Licence holders are subjected to thorough regulations during grazing activities. They are mandated to graze only in designated open desert areas, maintaining a clear distance of two kilometres from sensitive locations such as nature reserves, residential areas, roads, and operational military or petroleum sites.
Ranchers must ensure that camels are continuously supervised by a ranger and that grazing occurs solely within the designated timeframe outlined in the licence.
The guidelines incorporate various environmental safeguards. Camel owners are explicitly prohibited from:
These measures are meticulously designed to safeguard biodiversity and ensure the sustained vitality of natural grazing terrains in Abu Dhabi.
EAD emphasizes the crucial role camel owners and breeders play in adhering to these regulations. Their active participation is key to environmental protection, preservation of traditional customs, and promotion of sustainable grazing practices throughout the emirate.
