Uber Technologies is investing over $100 million to build charging hubs for its autonomous vehicles, a move that shows the company’s commitment to expanding self-driving taxi services. The new charging stations will make it easier for Uber’s robotaxi fleets to operate efficiently and grow in key cities.
The plan includes building fast DC charging stations at Uber’s autonomous vehicle depots, where daily fleet operations are managed, and at strategic pit stops across priority locations. The rollout will begin in U.S. cities such as the Bay Area, Los Angeles, and Dallas, with more cities planned later.
Uber is also partnering with several charging network companies under “utilization guarantee agreements.” These partnerships include EVgo in major U.S. cities, Electra in Paris and Madrid, and Hubber and Ionity in London. Together, these agreements will support the installation of hundreds of chargers in areas where autonomous vehicles need power the most.
Autonomous vehicles are a central part of Uber’s growth strategy. The company is working with over 20 global partners on self-driving freight, delivery, and taxi services. Currently, Uber offers robotaxi rides in four U.S. cities, as well as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Riyadh. The company has also partnered with Waymo and China’s WeRide to operate autonomous vehicle fleets.
Earlier this month, Uber confirmed its commitment to self-driving technology by investing capital in vehicle partners. This strategy ensures early access to autonomous vehicles and speeds up deployment, giving Uber an edge over competitors like Tesla and other ride-hailing platforms exploring EV and self-driving technology.
The new charging infrastructure will help Uber maintain high operational efficiency. By reducing downtime and ensuring vehicles have quick access to power, the company can provide reliable robotaxi services while preparing for future fleet growth.
Industry experts note that robust charging networks are essential for autonomous vehicle operations. With global expansion in mind, Uber’s investment highlights the importance of infrastructure in supporting the next generation of electric, self-driving transportation.
Uber’s $100 million commitment signals its serious approach to autonomous mobility. By building fast-charging hubs and working with global partners, the company is positioning itself to grow robotaxi services safely and efficiently across multiple cities worldwide.
