In a significant gathering at the G20 summit in South Africa, Ukraine’s allies aim to discuss strategies to “reinforce” a US-brokered initiative designed to conclude the ongoing conflict with Russia. This summit unfolds shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of “one of the most challenging moments in our history” as he faces mounting pressure to accept a plan perceived to favor Moscow.
Zelensky engaged in discussions via phone on Friday with UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, along with the leaders of France and Germany. Starmer reaffirmed that Ukraine’s global partners remain dedicated to ensuring a “lasting peace once and for all.”
Notably, neither US President Donald Trump nor Russian President Vladimir Putin will be present at the G20 summit.
Controversial US Peace Plan
The US-led plan, the details of which have been extensively reported, encompasses terms that Ukraine had earlier rejected. Key proposals suggest that Kyiv would need to relinquish control over specific eastern regions, limit its military forces, and abstain from pursuing NATO membership—demands long advocated by Russia.
Recently, senior US military officials made visits to Kyiv to confer with Ukrainian leaders regarding the plan. While the United States is advocating for prompt acceptance, numerous European leaders have voiced apprehensions suggesting that the proposals disproportionately benefit Moscow. EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas characterized the potential endorsement of the plan as a “very perilous moment,” asserting that “the terms of any agreement are for Ukraine to determine.”
Agenda for the G20 Summit
Prior to the summit, Starmer articulated that global leaders would evaluate the present proposal and discuss methods to bolster it for upcoming negotiations. “Ukraine has been positioned to negotiate for months, yet Russia has persisted in its lethal assault,” commented Starmer. He emphasized that collaborative efforts with both the US and Ukraine are essential for achieving a just and enduring peace.
Warnings from Trump Regarding Ukraine
US President Donald Trump has signaled that Ukraine may forfeit additional territory to Russia if it fails to agree to the proposed plan. He has imposed a deadline of Thursday, coinciding with US Thanksgiving, for Kyiv's response, deeming it a “fitting” moment for a decision.
This scenario underscores the escalating international tensions as Ukraine deliberates the US peace initiative while striving to safeguard its sovereignty and uphold strong alliances throughout Europe.
