In a bid to enhance smart and sustainable transportation, Dubai is ramping up efforts as His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum inspects the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA)'s strategic plans and upcoming projects. His focus remains on upgrading the city's transportation network and implementing next-gen mobility solutions.
His Highness toured RTA's Enterprise Command and Control Centre (EC³), a groundbreaking facility that unifies all modes of transport within a single infrastructure—this first for the Middle East. The centre oversees traffic flow, emergencies, and incidents citywide, managing around 28,000 vehicles each day and processing 4.4 billion mobility data points. Equipped with over 10,000 cameras and 34 interconnected technological systems, the centre utilizes AI and machine-learning algorithms for swift, effective responses while minimizing human errors.
Enhancing Road and Public Transport Systems
The RTA's ambitious vision positions Dubai as a frontrunner in seamless mobility. Currently, the emirate boasts a road network that extends over 25,000 lane-kilometres and includes upwards of 1,000 vehicle bridges and tunnels, as well as 177 pedestrian crossings. Public transport caters to over two million riders daily, featuring a comprehensive 100-kilometre metro and tram network, 1,380 buses, 13,900 taxis, 210 marine vessels, and a suite of integrated services.
Upcoming highlights include the Dubai Metro Blue Line, a 30-kilometre stretch featuring 14 stations that will connect the Red and Green lines, linking critical residential, developmental, and industrial zones projected to serve one million residents by 2040. Travel to Dubai International Airport will be reduced to a mere 20 minutes.
Innovative Mobility: Aerial and Autonomous Taxis
On the cutting-edge front, Dubai is pushing ahead with futuristic transportation concepts. The aerial taxi project, in collaboration with Joby Aviation and Skyports, has recently completed successful crewed test flights using electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Margham, confirming operational viability in local environments. Passenger services are expected to commence in 2026.
In parallel, RTA is experimenting with autonomous taxis in alliance with global mobility firms. The pilot phase is currently in progress, with commercial operations projected to launch by early 2026, signaling a significant advancement in Dubai's transition toward fully automated transportation.
Dubai's cohesive transport strategy blends innovative technology with solid infrastructure, promising a safe, efficient, and seamless commuting experience for both residents and visitors.
