Major Deira Stormwater Project Reaches 36% Completion in Dubai

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Dubai has made noteworthy advancements in its flagship stormwater management upgrade in Deira, with the project now 36% complete. The AED 500 million initiative is integral to bolstering the emirate’s drainage systems and flood control measures.

Project Summary

  • Total investment: AED 500 million

  • Area covered: 13 significant districts over 4,700 hectares

  • Expansion length: 60 km of stormwater drainage pipelines

  • Current status: 36% completion (Phase 1)

This initiative aims to bolster stormwater capacity, significantly mitigating flooding risks during heavy rainfall in vital urban areas.

Areas Impacted

The initiative encompasses numerous critical locations, including:
Al Qusais (1 & 2), Oud Al Muteena, Mizhar 3, Al Twar (1 & 3), Muhaisnah 4, Al Nahda 2, Al Qusais Industrial Area 1, Al Garhoud, Casablanca Street, the Dubai Airport area, and Al Rashidiya.

Engineering Progress and Developments

  • 22 km of drainage pipelines installed in Phase 1

  • Pipe diameters reaching up to 2.5 meters for enhanced flow

  • Construction of a new pumping station near Dubai Creek

  • Pumping capacity: up to 8,000 litres per second

Innovative engineering practices have been implemented to ensure effective project execution with minimal disruption to local communities and businesses.

Part of the Comprehensive Tasreef Programme

This initiative serves as a vital component of Dubai’s Tasreef Programme, a far-reaching plan aimed at revitalizing the emirate’s stormwater infrastructure with a total budget of AED 30 billion.

Key program objectives include:

  • Enhanced infrastructure capacity by up to 700%

  • Cutting construction and maintenance costs by 20%

  • Extending the operational lifespan of drainage systems

  • Boosting overall resilience against climatic challenges

Vision from the Government

Leadership from Dubai Municipality reiterated that this project showcases a long-term vision for creating a sustainable and adaptable urban environment. The goal is to enhance infrastructure efficacy, accommodate urban expansion, and ensure safety during extreme weather events.

Officials from the Waste and Sewerage Agency emphasized the introduction of modern engineering techniques to improve drainage efficiency, tackle flooding challenges, and allow uninterrupted business activities in key commercial districts.

With consistent advancements under the Tasreef Programme, Dubai is committed to reinforcing its stormwater infrastructure, solidifying its status as one of the globe’s most advanced and resilient urban landscapes.
