Togo Advocates for UN to Adopt Accurate World Map

Post by : Shakul

Togo is set to urge United Nations members to endorse a new world map that accurately depicts Africa's true dimensions. This initiative seeks to replace the outdated Mercator projection, which has faced criticism for misrepresenting the relative size of continents and influencing erroneous global perceptions.

Foreign Minister Robert Dussey is leading the charge, emphasizing the necessity of correcting geographical inaccuracies. He remarked that the current representation of Africa in popular maps significantly downplays its actual size, leading to distorted narratives in education, media, and political dialogues.

The Mercator projection, created in the 16th century for maritime navigation, enlarges areas near the poles, such as Greenland and North America, while diminishing equatorial regions like Africa and South America. In fact, Africa is around 14 times more expansive than Greenland, although traditional maps often depict them as comparable in size.

This initiative is part of a comprehensive campaign backed by the African Union, which has assigned Togo to advance the "Correct The Map" movement. Advocacy organizations are urging the use of the Equal Earth projection, introduced in 2018, which aims to provide a more equitable and scientifically sound representation of global land areas.

Officials have indicated that a draft resolution is underway and could be brought forward during the next United Nations General Assembly session. The resulting vote will likely underscore the varied responses of nations regarding the need for a more precise depiction of the world.

Proponents of the initiative believe that this endeavor transcends mere cartography, asserting that accurate mapping is crucial for reforming global perceptions and ensuring Africa's true magnitude, significance, and influence are recognized in international forums.
