Russian Air Strikes on Kyiv Kill Civilians in First 2026 Attack

Post by : Saif Nasser

Kyiv faced its first civilian casualties of 2026 after overnight Russian air strikes, Ukrainian authorities reported on Monday. The attack hit a hospital in the Obolonskyi district, where patients were receiving care. After firefighters extinguished the fire, one person was found dead inside the building. Another woman was injured, and 25 others were safely evacuated.

Emergency images showed responders carrying a body on a stretcher past an ambulance, with snow on the ground, highlighting the harsh winter conditions as rescue operations continued.

The violence extended beyond Kyiv. Russian strikes hit several towns and villages in the surrounding region, damaging homes and essential infrastructure. A civilian died in the Fastiv district, southwest of Kyiv, and some areas experienced power outages, said Mykola Kalashnyk, the regional governor.

Russia has not commented on the latest attacks. Both Russia and Ukraine maintain they do not target civilians, yet repeated strikes have damaged hospitals, homes, and public services throughout the nearly four-year-long war. Ukraine claims Russian missile and drone attacks often strike civilian areas, while Russia insists its targets are military.

The attack highlights the ongoing human cost of the conflict. Civilians remain at risk even as a new year begins, and emergency services continue to work under difficult conditions to protect lives and respond to damage.

Humanitarian organizations and international observers continue to call for the protection of civilians and support for affected communities. The latest strikes on Kyiv and nearby areas underline the urgent need for continued aid and a resolution to the conflict that safeguards ordinary citizens.
