The enthusiasm surrounding global K-pop icon BTS has soared to unprecedented heights as fans eagerly hunt for tickets to their highly anticipated comeback tour, marking their first return in four years. In Mexico, the excitement has escalated to such an extent that President Claudia Sheinbaum has taken the initiative to appeal to South Korea's government for the possibility of adding more concert dates in her region.
On Monday, Sheinbaum shared that she has reached out directly to South Korea's president, expressing her desire for additional BTS performances to be scheduled in Mexico. Although a response is still awaited, she noted that fans remain hopeful. Currently, BTS is set to hold three concerts in Mexico City in May as part of their extensive 79-date world tour, which saw tickets sell out within a mere 40 minutes, as reported by local media.
The surging interest has also led to disputes, with fans alleging that ticket platforms and resale sites have implemented dynamic pricing, causing ticket prices to skyrocket beyond their original values. While official ticket prices ranged from 1,800 to 17,800 pesos, some resale outlets listed tickets for staggering prices, reportedly reaching up to 92,100 pesos.
In response, Mexico's consumer protection agency has intervened, penalizing resale platforms for what it characterized as exploitative and unfair ticketing practices. Reports indicate that approximately one million young admirers vied for merely 150,000 available tickets, underscoring BTS's significant popularity in the nation.
Ranking as the fifth-largest K-pop market worldwide, Mexico has witnessed a more than 500% increase in streaming of the genre over the last five years. Although local promoters have put in requests for more shows, BTS’s tightly organized schedule has yet to allow any additional dates.
The musical group has not come together for new music since mid-2022, having prioritized solo ventures and completing mandatory military service. Their comeback tour is set to commence in April in South Korea, traversing through Asia, Europe, and the Americas, with projections indicating it could yield upward of $1 billion in total revenue.
