Ukraine Uses Long-Range Drones to Strike Russian Targets

Post by : Saif Nasser

Ukraine has been using drones to attack Russian oil and energy facilities in a new strategy to weaken its larger neighbor. Since August 2025, Ukraine has carried out over 60 attacks on Russian energy sites, causing serious damage and interrupting the flow of oil through Russia’s large pipeline network.

A senior commander in Ukraine’s 14th Deep Strike Regiment, which leads these drone missions, said that drones are now flying up to 2,000 kilometers to reach Russian targets. He asked to be identified by his call sign, Charlie, in line with military rules.

Challenging Russian Defences

Charlie explained that Russia is a skilled opponent with strong air defence systems. Russian forces have been improving their ability to detect and destroy drones. They also use electronic warfare technology to track and block drone attacks.

Despite these challenges, the Ukrainian unit is using new technology and careful planning to stay ahead. The commander said that Ukraine now focuses more on the quality of drones rather than the number. A smaller number of highly advanced drones can be more effective than a large fleet.

The Development of Drone Warfare

Drone warfare has changed quickly since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Both sides now use drones not only at the front lines but also far behind them.

Russia has launched hundreds of kamikaze drones to attack Ukrainian infrastructure.

Ukraine focuses on long-range strikes inside Russia, especially targeting energy systems that support Russia’s military operations.

The commander said Ukraine has a dedicated research and development team to improve drone technology and tactics.

How Drone Attacks Work

Ukraine has used drones in complex operations. Some missions may involve up to 300 drones, though the typical number is smaller and often includes decoys to confuse Russian defenses.

Russia, in turn, uses mass drone attacks to overwhelm Ukraine’s defenses. Charlie said that relying on large numbers of drones alone does not always guarantee success. New approaches, advanced technology, and careful planning are key to Ukraine’s drone strategy.

Impact of Drone Strikes

The attacks have caused significant disruption to Russia’s oil and energy systems. Ukrainian leaders see these strikes as a way to pressure Russia without escalating direct fighting on the front lines.

Russian officials have said that attacks on their energy infrastructure are dangerously escalatory, but Ukraine continues to find weak points in Russia’s defenses using smart technology and careful planning.

Ukraine’s drone campaign shows how modern warfare is changing. Long-range drones, advanced technology, and research-driven strategies allow a smaller force to challenge a larger military. As both sides continue to adapt, the use of drones is becoming a critical part of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
