Russia and Ukraine Exchange Blame Over Civilian Attacks During New Year Fighting

Post by : Saif Nasser

The war between Russia and Ukraine entered the New Year with fresh accusations from both sides, as fighting continued despite hopes for calm during the holiday. On New Year’s Day, Russia and Ukraine blamed each other for attacks that they said killed and injured civilians, adding to the pain of a conflict that has lasted nearly four years.

Russia said at least 24 people, including a child, were killed when Ukrainian drones hit a hotel and café in a Russian-controlled area of Ukraine’s Kherson region. According to Russian-installed officials, people were gathered there to celebrate the New Year when the strike happened. They said dozens more were injured, and some victims were burned in the fire that followed.

Ukraine strongly rejected claims that it targets civilians. Ukrainian military officials said their forces aim only at military and energy-related targets. They did not directly comment on the hotel incident but repeated that Ukraine follows strict rules to avoid harming civilians.

At the same time, Ukraine accused Russia of launching a large wave of attacks across the country. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said Russia fired more than 200 attack drones overnight, striking energy facilities in seven regions. He said the attacks damaged power supplies and showed that Russia was bringing war into the New Year instead of peace.

Ukrainian officials reported civilian casualties from Russian attacks as well. In the Ukrainian-held city of Kherson, one man was killed and an elderly woman was injured, according to regional authorities. Ukraine also said rail facilities were hit in several regions, affecting transport and daily life.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its strikes were aimed at military targets and energy systems it claimed were being used to support Ukraine’s armed forces. Moscow denied deliberately targeting civilians and accused Ukraine of spreading false information.

The exchange of accusations comes as talks led by the United States continue behind the scenes, with the goal of finding a path to end the war. Both Russia and Ukraine believe the other side is trying to influence international opinion and gain support during these discussions.

Russian officials described the alleged hotel strike as a serious crime and said those responsible should be punished. Ukrainian leaders, meanwhile, warned that continued Russian attacks show the urgent need for stronger air defenses and faster delivery of military aid promised by allies.

Independent verification of battlefield claims remains difficult. Journalists and observers often cannot reach the sites of attacks, especially in occupied or frontline areas. This makes it hard to confirm exactly what happened and who was responsible.

What is clear is that civilians continue to suffer the most. Homes, power systems, transport networks, and places of celebration have all been affected by the fighting. For families on both sides, the New Year brought fear instead of hope.

As the war moves into another year, the events of New Year’s Day highlight the deep mistrust between Russia and Ukraine. Without a lasting ceasefire or agreement, holidays and ordinary days alike remain dangerous for millions of people caught in the conflict.
