Russia Fires New Wave of Missiles and Drones at Ukraine as Next Peace Talks Remain Unclear

Russia has launched a fresh and powerful wave of missile and drone attacks on several Ukrainian cities, causing injuries, fires, and major damage to homes and public services. The strikes came at a time when uncertainty is growing over the next round of peace talks that are being pushed by the United States.

Ukrainian officials said Russia fired hundreds of long-range drones and many ballistic missiles overnight. Major cities including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Dnipro, and Odesa were hit. These cities have faced repeated attacks since the war began, but this latest barrage again showed how intense the conflict remains even while diplomatic talks are being discussed.

Ukrainian authorities reported that residential buildings were damaged in several places. In Dnipro, multiple people were hurt, including very young children. In Odesa, a tall apartment building was partly destroyed, and fires broke out in a market and a supermarket. In Kyiv, homes were damaged and civilians were injured. Emergency teams worked through the night in freezing conditions to rescue residents and control fires.

The attacks also badly affected basic services. Thousands of buildings were left without heating in the capital. In Odesa, hundreds of thousands of people were reported to be without running water. In Dnipro, parts of the central heating system stopped working, leaving many families in the cold. Damage to energy and utility systems has become a repeated feature of these strikes.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russia appears unsure about joining the next round of negotiations proposed by Washington. According to him, the United States has suggested that Russian and Ukrainian teams meet again soon, possibly in Miami or Abu Dhabi. Ukraine has agreed to attend, but Russia has not clearly confirmed participation yet. Kremlin officials said talks are expected but did not give details.

The peace effort has been going on for many months, but key disagreements remain. The biggest disputes include control of occupied Ukrainian territory and long-term security guarantees for Ukraine. Ukrainian leaders say they want firm international security support and reconstruction plans before signing any final settlement. Russian leaders have pushed for territorial concessions and other security terms.

While talks remain uncertain, fighting on the ground continues. Ukrainian forces have also carried out long-range strikes inside Russian territory. Ukrainian military sources said one of their drones struck an oil refinery deep inside Russia, marking one of their longest-distance attacks so far. They also reported hits on weapons storage sites and defense industry facilities. These strikes are aimed at reducing Russia’s military supply and energy income.

International voices have raised concern about attacks on civilian infrastructure. United Nations human rights officials repeated that striking power grids, water systems, and residential buildings violates international humanitarian law when civilians are affected. Calls have been made for both sides to avoid targeting non-military sites.

In a separate humanitarian development, a small group of children from both countries who were separated from their families during the war were recently reunited. Such actions show that even during conflict, limited cooperation is still possible on humanitarian grounds.

The latest attacks and counter-attacks show a hard truth: the war is still active and dangerous, even as peace talks are discussed. Missiles and drones are still flying while diplomats talk about meeting rooms and deadlines. For civilians living in targeted cities, daily safety matters more than political timelines.

Real progress toward peace will require firm decisions, compromise, and trust from both sides. Until then, the risk remains high that more cities will face more nights of sirens, explosions, and uncertainty.
