NEW DELHI – In a significant development, Indian counter-terrorism forces executed a raid late Thursday as part of an investigation into alleged illicit activities, officials confirmed. This raid occurs against a backdrop of increased examination of organizations thought to have ties to secessionist or anti-national factions within and beyond Jammu and Kashmir.
The State Investigation Agency (SIA) reported that the operation was directed at a media office suspected of being involved in a “criminal conspiracy with secessionist and other anti-national elements.” During the operation, law enforcement allegedly confiscated a revolver, live ammunition, and empty shell casings, prompting further inquiries. The residence of the media outlet's owner was also subject to a search.
The media organization strongly denied these allegations, calling them “unfounded,” and noted that the office targeted has remained closed for the last four years. On Friday, the outlet claimed the accusations were intended to “intimidate, delegitimize, and silence” their operations. Since 2022, it has functioned solely online following a previous raid that sealed its earlier premises.
This raid is part of a larger pattern of security actions in the area, particularly following a fatal car explosion near Delhi's Red Fort on November 10, which authorities stated was executed by a Kashmiri suicide bomber. So far, no official link has been made between the Red Fort incident and the raid on the news agency.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) voiced apprehension over the raid, labeling it “deeply troubling” and underscoring the increasing pressure facing media organizations in Jammu and Kashmir. Since 2019, after the Indian government annulled segments of the region's autonomy, numerous journalists have encountered harassment, arrests, and raids at their residences and offices.
Authorities have reaffirmed that the investigation remains active, with further measures to be implemented if connections to anti-national or extremist factions are established.
