St. Charles County, Missouri – A seasoned judge in Missouri has announced his resignation after disciplinary action stemming from his peculiar behavior in court associated with Elvis Presley. Judge Matthew EP Thornhill, noted as the county’s longest-serving circuit judge, resigned amid backlash for donning an Elvis wig and intermittently playing the music of the iconic singer during court sessions.
These actions reportedly took place over several years. Thornhill, a dedicated Elvis enthusiast, acknowledged in a letter dated November 12 that he occasionally donned an Elvis wig near Halloween and played tunes from his phone to ease the atmosphere for litigants. Although he claimed his actions aimed at reducing tension, the disciplinary commission maintained that such behavior undermined the "integrity and solemnity of the proceedings."
The disciplinary report detailed that Judge Thornhill would sometimes reference Elvis’ life events, mentioning his birth, death, and even quoting song lyrics during formal court activities. Included in the report were images of Thornhill sitting on the bench in his Elvis wig and sunglasses, using music during the administration of oaths.
The commission's findings also pointed to other unrelated conduct, such as promoting his political views from the bench and inquiring if courtroom attendees had seen his campaign signage for re-election. The findings concluded that Thornhill “failed to maintain order and decorum in the courtroom,” and recommended a mandatory six-month suspension without pay, followed by an 18-month probationary period leading up to his retirement.
In his resignation note, Thornhill accepted the allegations as "substantially accurate," agreeing to the commission's stipulations, which permitted him to conclude his two-decade tenure on the bench.
Known for his enduring admiration for Elvis Presley, Thornhill has visited Graceland, the singer’s residence and resting place, a remarkable 13 times. He has long expressed that Elvis has significantly influenced his life. Despite good intentions to add humor, the Missouri court authorities ultimately deemed his actions unsuitable for the court's formal environment.
