Tragedy struck near Galveston, Texas, as a Mexican Navy airplane crashed on Monday, claiming the lives of five individuals due to severe fog conditions. The aircraft was engaged in a humanitarian mission, transporting a child burn victim when the incident occurred.
Data from flight tracking indicated that the plane was last recognized at 3:01 PM local time (21:01 GMT), over Galveston Bay, in proximity to Scholes International Airport.
This flight was part of a benevolent initiative by the Michou y Mau Foundation, dedicated to providing medical assistance to young Mexican patients suffering from serious burns.
Reportedly, one individual remains unaccounted for, while two others have successfully been rescued, according to information from Mexico's Secretariat of the Navy.
Witnesses provided video evidence showing the wreckage submerged in water, with emergency responders and local volunteers conducting searches for survivors and debris.
Sky Decker Jr., a local yacht captain, shared his experience of navigating to the crash zone with two police officers, before diving in and discovering a severely injured woman trapped within the debris. He vividly recounted, “She had barely three inches of air to breathe. The water was mixed with jet fuel, and the fumes were intense. She was desperately fighting for her life.”
The Mexican Navy has affirmed that ongoing search and rescue operations are being conducted in partnership with the U.S. Coast Guard to find the missing and provide aid to survivors.
Rescue personnel, including divers, are facing significant challenges due to the dense fog enveloping Scholes International Airport.
In a heartfelt message on the social media platform X, the Michou y Mau Foundation extended their condolences to the grieving families affected by this devastating event.
