The Journey of John Skelley as Broadway's Harry Potter

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

For actor John Skelley, stepping into the shoes of Harry Potter represents more than just a role; it symbolizes a journey that has spanned various locations, years, and life’s uncertainties—always returning at precisely the right moment.

Currently, Skelley stars as the adult wizard in the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which takes place 19 years post the final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. This significant event seems less a matter of casting and more a stroke of fate.

“It’s something that continues to reappear in my life,” Skelley remarked. “There were moments when I honestly thought that chapter had ended, yet somehow, the door kept reopening.”

From Backup to Lead

Skelley’s journey with Harry began subtly as he first accepted an understudy position on Broadway, prepared to fill in for the lead if necessary. He later rose to headline the San Francisco version, which premiered in late 2019 before the pandemic forced theaters to close.

Initially, Skelley was not a fervent fan of Potter; he hadn't read the books beforehand and had only casually watched the films. This quickly transformed as he immersed himself in the wizarding universe after getting the part, reading all seven books at remarkable speed—one each week.

Now, Harry Potter has become integral to his life, both professionally and personally. “The collection of Harry Potter memorabilia surrounding me is astounding,” he chuckled.

A Life Shaped by Determination

Originally hailing from Minneapolis, Skelley’s acting career started at eight with a school musical. He later trained at the University of Minnesota/Guthrie Theater BFA Actor Training Program and began working professionally in 2007.

After relocating to New York with his spouse, actor Maren Searle, in 2014, they faced years filled with auditions, voice acting, and off-Broadway ventures. Like many performers, Skelley dealt with financial instability and long spells without consistent work.

This is why the call about Potter felt transformative.

“I maintained a straightforward focus during auditions—don’t give up too soon,” he recalled, reflecting on wisdom from childhood football trials. This persistence paid off when his agent posed the now-iconic question: “Would you like to go to Hogwarts?”

A Voyage through the Wizarding World

Skelley’s connection with Potter broadened nationally. After San Francisco reopened following the pandemic, he joined the nationwide tour, performing in major cities including Chicago, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., while his wife was part of the ensemble, making the experience both professional and intimate.

As winter approached, Skelley’s story returned to Broadway—not as an understudy but as the definitive Harry Potter.

Director John Tiffany acknowledges the emotional depth and leadership that Skelley brings to the role. “His portrayal of Harry is filled with profound truth and vulnerability,” Tiffany remarked. “Witnessing his character grow over this seven-year journey has been a delight.”

Sharing the Legacy on Stage

Skelley now shares the stage with Tom Felton, known for his role as Draco Malfoy in the original films. At times, his wife also steps in as Ginny Weasley, allowing them to play a married couple in real life as well as on stage.

The most impactful moments for Skelley, however, arise from the audience. “Parents my age are now taking their children,” he shared. “For many, it’s their first experience with live theater.”

That’s the enchantment he hopes audiences carry away—not merely the magic and spectacle but a rekindled appreciation for live performances.

“My life has revolved around theater,” Skelley expressed. “If this show can inspire even a handful of people to support live performances in their communities, that would mean everything.”
