Release of 130 Students From St Mary’s Catholic School Marks Hopeful Turn in Nigeria

Post by : Mara Rahim

In a significant development, Nigerian authorities have officially released 130 schoolchildren from St Mary’s Catholic school located in Niger state. This announcement follows the earlier recovery of 100 students earlier this month. Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare confirmed via X that all students have been safely returned, sharing photographs of the joyous young faces.

The abduction took place in late November when armed assailants attacked the co-educational boarding school in the rural Papiri area of north-central Niger state. The shocking incident resulted in numerous students and staff being taken hostage, leaving local communities engulfed in fear and uncertainty.

The precise total of those abducted remains unclear. According to the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), a total of 315 individuals were taken, with approximately 50 managing to escape soon after. The government successfully secured the release of about 100 students on December 7.

President Bola Tinubu later indicated that roughly 115 individuals were still unaccounted for. The remaining children are expected to be transferred to Minna, the state capital, on Tuesday. The circumstances surrounding the attack and the subsequent rescue efforts remain undisclosed.

Mass kidnappings for ransom have tragically become commonplace in Nigeria, underscoring the nation’s precarious security landscape. Recent incidents have also targeted Muslim schoolgirls, churchgoers, and agricultural workers, indicating that both communities face distinct threats.

With a population of 230 million, Nigeria grapples with the menace of armed gangs in the northwest and jihadist factions in the northeast. While some international leaders have labeled these attacks as “genocide,” Nigerian authorities dispute this characterization. The safe return of these children provides a glimmer of hope, yet it also emphasizes the urgent necessity for enhanced security measures to protect students nationwide.
