Allan Legere's Parole Denied Due to Ongoing Threat to Society

Post by : Mina Rahman

In a recent ruling, the Parole Board of Canada has once more denied full parole for the notorious serial killer Allan Legere, emphasizing that he remains a significant threat to public safety. This decision, finalized on December 12, followed a review of his latest psychological and behavioral evaluations.

Legere, now aged 77, is infamously recognized as the “Monster of the Miramichi” due to a horrific series of murders and assaults in New Brunswick during the late 1980s. He was found guilty of the murders of five individuals and numerous sexual assaults, which deeply disturbed the local communities.

As detailed in the board’s decision, recent assessments have concluded that Legere still holds a high probability of engaging in violent behavior, alongside a moderate risk for sexual reoffending. These conclusions were drawn from expert psychological analyses and his current behavior in prison.

The decision also considered Legere's concerning conduct while incarcerated. Officials have indicated that he has struggled with institutional adaptability over the years and has not shown significant rehabilitative progress. The board highlighted the severe nature of his historical offenses, which resulted in the tragic deaths of five innocent victims.

Another major point of concern stems from Legere’s record of reoffending while under supervision. A significant number of his crimes were committed during periods of mandatory release or following escape from custody, raising questions about his compliance with parole conditions if released.

Moreover, the board emphasized that Legere has yet to finish a high-intensity treatment program for sex offenders, labeling him an untreated sexual offender. This was a crucial factor in their decision to deny his parole.

Overall, the ruling reaffirms the board's stance that allowing Legere to be released poses an unacceptable risk to the public, with public safety remaining paramount.
