Thailand's GI Products Market Surpasses 400 Million Baht

Thailand's GI Products Market Surpasses 400 Million Baht

Post by : Shakul

Thailand's government has announced noteworthy growth in Geographical Indication (GI) products, particularly in pottery, handicrafts, and items made from natural materials. The estimated market value now exceeds 440 million baht, underscoring their rising significance in the country's economy.

Survey findings from 27 GI-registered products across 39 provinces indicate that these goods not only help preserve traditional craftsmanship but also generate substantial income for local communities. This positive trend reflects a growing appetite for genuine and regionally sourced products.

Phatthalung sedge stands out as the leading product, contributing approximately 150 million baht in revenue. Its average price has notably risen to about 300 baht per unit, indicating that GI certification has significantly boosted its market attractiveness.

Other key players include Kanchanaburi black spinel, generating over 90 million baht, and traditional silk from Isaan, which has amassed more than 43 million baht. These items have also seen price increases, reflecting surging demand and heightened branding efforts.

Lopburi kaolin and Pran Kratai marble are also contributing positively to the market. Utilized in construction and handicrafts, these materials have experienced consistent price growth following their GI designation. The diverse pricing of marble and crafts highlights their adaptable roles across various sectors.

Officials indicate that GI certification has enhanced both quality and value, establishing stronger identities for local products. This has allowed producers to compete effectively in domestic and international markets.

The Thai government has incorporated the promotion of GI products into its economic strategy, recognizing them as essential for bolstering small enterprises and sustaining rural incomes under its SME development policy.

Experts assert that ongoing support and promotion could lead to further growth in the GI sector. As awareness and demand continue to rise, these traditional products are anticipated to significantly influence Thailand’s economy in the future.
