Johannesburg, November 22, 2025: The inaugural G20 Leaders’ Summit on the African continent commenced today, with South Africa as its host. The summit, running over three days, adopts the theme “Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability” to address crucial global challenges.

Key areas of focus include enhancing disaster resilience, ensuring debt sustainability for low-income nations, mobilising funding for a just energy transition, and fostering inclusive growth through critical minerals. Important discussions on economic, environmental, and social issues affecting nations globally are also anticipated.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Johannesburg on the evening of November 21 to partake in the proceedings. Upon arrival, he met with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who welcomed him with a traditional “Namaste”—a gesture reinforcing the strong diplomatic bond between the two countries. Their meeting centered around key global and regional priorities.

Throughout India's G20 Presidency from December 2022 to November 2023, over 200 meetings occurred across 60 cities featuring representatives from all 28 states and 8 Union Territories. The engagement was remarkable, with participation from more than 100,000 individuals, including 30,000 delegates from 135 nations. Under PM Modi’s guidance, the African Union was accepted as a permanent member, demonstrating India’s commitment to a more inclusive G20.

At this summit, PM Modi plans to share India's viewpoint on pressing global matters, underscoring the need for inclusive and sustainable economic growth while ensuring no one is left behind. He is also set to conduct a series of bilateral meetings with international leaders to enhance cooperation on trade, climate initiatives, and economic progress.

The summit's opening session will concentrate on pathways for inclusive growth and sustainable development, followed by discussions on climate change, energy transitions, financial stability, and global health preparedness.

The G20 Leaders’ Summit 2025 signifies a pivotal moment for nations to unite, exchange insights, and strengthen global alliances, with PM Modi playing an active role in promoting India’s vision for a fairer and more sustainable global landscape.
