At least fifteen migrants lost their lives in the Aegean Sea near Greece after a small boat carrying them collided with a Greek coast guard vessel close to the island of Chios. The tragic incident has once again drawn attention to the dangers faced by migrants trying to reach Europe by sea.
According to Greek authorities, the coast guard spotted a rubber dinghy carrying migrants as it moved toward Chios, an island located just a few miles from the Turkish coast. Officers ordered the boat to turn back. During the encounter, the boat reportedly changed direction and struck the coast guard vessel, leading to the deadly collision.
Rescue teams were quickly deployed to the area. The coast guard said 25 migrants were pulled from the water alive. However, one of the rescued survivors, a woman, later died despite efforts to save her. Search and rescue operations continued as officials feared others might still be missing.
Two coast guard officers were also injured in the incident and were taken to a hospital for treatment. Witnesses told officials that around 30 to 35 people were believed to be on the migrant boat at the time of the collision. The nationalities of the migrants have not yet been confirmed.
The exact cause of the crash remains unclear. Reuters said it could not independently verify how the collision happened. Greek authorities stated that smugglers were steering the boat and made sudden movements toward the patrol vessel, leading to the impact.
Greece has long been one of the main entry points into Europe for migrants and refugees fleeing conflict, poverty, and hardship in parts of the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. During the migration crisis of 2015 and 2016, nearly one million people arrived on Greek islands, including Chios, after crossing from Turkey.
In recent years, migrant arrivals have dropped as Greece strengthened border controls. Since 2019, the government has increased sea patrols and built border fences. Officials say these measures are needed to protect national borders and stop human smuggling networks.
However, Greece has faced criticism from human rights groups and international bodies over how migrants are treated at sea. A deadly shipwreck in 2023, in which hundreds of migrants died, raised serious questions about coast guard actions during rescue efforts. The European Union’s border agency has also reviewed several cases involving Greece for possible human rights violations.
Greek authorities deny all accusations of illegal pushbacks or abuse. They say their forces act according to the law and focus on saving lives whenever possible.
This latest tragedy near Chios adds to a long list of deadly incidents in the Mediterranean and Aegean seas. It highlights the risks migrants face on dangerous sea journeys and the urgent need for safer solutions, stronger international cooperation, and humane migration policies.
