Qatar's Peace Initiative Unanimously Endorsed at IPU Assembly in Istanbul

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

During the recent 152nd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union held in Istanbul, Turkey, a vital resolution put forth by Qatar, along with several other nations, received unanimous backing from member parliaments.

This resolution underscores the pressing demand for collaborative parliamentary initiatives to endorse ceasefire agreements and advocate for peace in the Middle East and beyond. It showcases the increasingly essential role of parliamentary diplomacy in sustaining global serenity and stability.

The proposal, supported robustly by Qatar’s Shura Council, was prominently featured on the Assembly’s agenda. Notably, it marks the first occasion that an emergency issue brought forward by an Arab nation has accrued sufficient votes for discussion at the IPU General Assembly, marking a significant diplomatic milestone.

Led by Speaker Hassan bin Abdullah Al Ghanim, Qatar's delegation engaged vigorously in debates and sessions centered around the theme, “Promoting hope, preserving peace, and ensuring justice for future generations.”

At the Governing Council session, Deputy Speaker Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti emphasized Qatar's contributions to global development. She recounted a parliamentary forum in Doha coinciding with the Second World Summit for Social Development, which focused on investment in people and the legislative role in social advancement.

Additionally, she raised crucial issues pertaining to enhancing the institutional functions of the IPU, addressing digital violence, and combating misinformation aimed at women in politics, advocating for robust legislation to protect women and ensure their secure political participation.

Members of Qatar’s delegation actively participated in assorted standing committee meetings, involving debates on democracy and human rights, United Nations issues, and sustainable growth, affirming the pivotal role of parliaments in confronting global challenges.

The concluding "Istanbul Declaration" highlighted the necessity of youth engagement in decision-making, empowerment of women, and responsible utilization of modern technologies, particularly artificial intelligence. It also urged for intensified international collaboration and transformation of commitments into actionable legislative measures.

In summary, the Assembly reaffirmed the significance of unity, dialogue, and parliamentary cooperation in the relentless pursuit of enduring peace across the globe.
