FAA Alerts Airlines About Venezuelan Airspace Amid Military Tensions

Post by : Raina Nasser

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States has sounded an alarm for airlines operating over Venezuelan airspace, citing escalating military actions and a deteriorating security environment in the area. Issued on Friday, the advisory emphasizes that while flights are not prohibited, pilots must take heightened precautions.

This warning emerges alongside a significant uptick in US military deployments near Venezuela, featuring advanced aircraft carriers, warships, and F-35 stealth jets, along with a contingent of thousands of troops. Officials assert that this military buildup is aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks throughout Latin America.

Since September, Venezuela has engaged in numerous extensive military drills and has activated a large number of military and reserve forces. The FAA has noted a rise in disruptions to global navigation satellite signals in Venezuelan airspace, which can compromise flight navigation. Nevertheless, Venezuelan officials have not signaled any intention of targeting commercial flights.

The FAA has recommended that all stages of flight within Venezuelan airspace—including overflights, arrivals, departures, and ground operations—should be approached with increased vigilance. US airlines en route over Venezuela to other South American locations must now notify the FAA 72 hours in advance. Some carriers, such as American Airlines, have preemptively ceased operations over Venezuelan airspace.

President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela has condemned the US military escalation, asserting it could serve as a pretext for regime change. Meanwhile, US forces have reportedly conducted operations against vessels in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, reportedly resulting in over 80 deaths of individuals suspected of drug trafficking, though no public evidence of illegal activity has been presented.

Direct flights between the US and Venezuela have been halted since 2019. The FAA stated that it will keep a close watch on security developments in the region and will update its aviation advisory as required.

This warning reflects the escalating frictions between Washington and Caracas while also underscoring the safety concerns for airlines navigating Venezuelan airspace.
