Innovative VR Solutions Enhance Experiences in Senior Living Facilities

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

At first look, The Terraces in Los Gatos, California, seems like a typical retirement community—peaceful, inviting, and tailored for the needs of older adults. For many residents in their 80s and 90s, travel and physical excursions are increasingly challenging. However, virtual reality (VR) has changed the game, allowing them to explore the world beyond their four walls.

On designated days, staff at The Terraces equip seniors with VR headsets, enabling them to experience destinations and memories they once thought were lost. In no time, seniors find themselves visiting bustling European cities, swimming in ocean depths, or soaring through the skies—all while comfortably seated with friends.

The VR initiatives are provided by Rendever, a company dedicated to utilizing immersive technology to foster improved mental health and social ties among older adults. Their platform is now operational in around 800 senior living facilities across the United States and Canada.

Diving into New Experiences

During a recent VR session, residents joyfully mimicked swimming motions as they “dove” with dolphins in a 3D ocean environment. Laughter echoed through the room, as 81-year-old Ginny Baird remarked, “We went underwater without even having to hold our breath!”

Other experiences elicited powerful reactions—a hot-air balloon ride sent gasps throughout the crowd, while some residents grasped their chairs as if bracing against the wind, illustrating how genuine the emotions felt, even in a virtual setting.

Reconnecting with the Past

In addition to exhilarating adventures, VR has shown remarkable potential in reconnecting seniors with their past. The technology enables residents to revisit childhood neighborhoods and familiar sights—sometimes after decades away.

Sue Livingstone, aged 84, shared that a virtual journey to her childhood neighborhood in Queens, New York, opened her eyes to VR’s true capabilities. “It’s more than just seeing it again,” she noted. “It’s all the memories that flood back.”

Livingstone believes VR can also encourage less adventurous residents to step outside their comfort zones. Once they experience curiosity, many are eager to explore the technology themselves.

Fostering Social Connections

Adrian Marshall, community life director at The Terraces, points out that VR experiences often lead to meaningful conversations. Residents discuss what they witnessed, reminisce, and form bonds, sometimes opting to join VR sessions instead of their usual activities like the favored game of Mexican Train dominoes.

“It helps forge connections,” says Marshall. “People discover shared interests and life experiences. The virtual environment transforms into a very real experience for them.”

Researching the Benefits

Rendever recently secured close to $4.5 million in funding from the National Institutes of Health to investigate how VR can alleviate social isolation among seniors and their caregivers. Initial findings suggest that, when implemented thoughtfully, VR could enhance cognitive function, bolster memory recall, and foster meaningful social interactions.

Experts underline that VR should enhance—not replace—traditional activities. “Excessive screen time poses risks,” warns neuropsychologist Katherine “Kate” Dupuis. “But when purposeful, it can help seniors become engaged, connect, and experience a sense of wonder.”

A User-Friendly Alternative

Surprisingly, many seniors find VR easier to use than smartphones or tablets. Researchers highlight that headsets eliminate the need for tiny buttons and complicated menus, making technology more accessible.

Pallabi Bhowmick, a researcher exploring VR among seniors, asserts that outdated stereotypes need to evolve. “Older adults are open to technology when it adds meaning to their lives,” she said, adding that it strengthens intergenerational relationships—grandchildren often delight in discovering their grandparents using VR.

A Mission with Heart

Rendever’s inception is rooted in personal motivation. Co-founder and CEO Kyle Rand established the company in 2016 to assist his grandmother in overcoming the emotional hurdles of aging. With expertise in neuroengineering, Rand recognized how shared virtual experiences could unite individuals.

“When seniors engage in VR together, something changes,” he observed. “They often start as strangers but end up sitting together at lunch, continuing their dialogue.”

Supporting Dementia Care

VR is also being examined as a supportive tool for those living with dementia. At another retirement community in Silicon Valley, residents utilize VR to stimulate memory and activate emotional responses.

Bob Rogallo, 83, who has dementia and no longer speaks, appeared fully engaged during a virtual hike in Glacier National Park. His wife, Sallie, noted that the experience rekindled memories from their years of traveling across the U.S. in an RV. “I wished I were 30 years younger,” she reflected.

In another VR session, 93-year-old Almut Schultz found joy watching a virtual classical concert at Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, even reaching out as though to pet a playful digital puppy.

“That was an incredible experience,” she said afterward, her smile radiant.

Transforming Life Experiences

For many seniors, virtual reality transcends entertainment. It provides freedom, connection, memory, and joy—all at their fingertips. While the destinations may be virtual, the feelings they evoke are profoundly real.
