Dubai Municipality has laid out a variety of measures to effectively handle the fluctuating weather conditions affecting Dubai and the entire UAE. The authority confirmed that specialized teams are monitoring the situation and working continuously. These initiatives are part of a year-round readiness strategy to mitigate the impact of heavy rains and maintain essential services.
The upgraded strategy aims to ensure the seamless operation of infrastructure under any weather conditions. Main focuses include protecting public safety, preserving property, minimizing disruptions, and facilitating smooth traffic throughout the emirate.
As part of its preventive measures, engineers have conducted thorough inspections and maintenance of stormwater drainage systems across Dubai. This effort includes the installation of 60 kilometers of above-ground pumping lines, designed to enhance water discharge in flood-prone areas.
To boost storage capacity, six temporary lakes have been established in critical areas, alongside existing rainwater lakes that can hold nearly 600,000 cubic meters. These facilities alleviate pressure on key networks during heavy rainfall. The pumping lines are also connected to crucial outfalls, including the Dubai Water Canal, Dubai Creek, and a deep tunnel system to ensure safe water diversion.
Emergency operational teams have increased maintenance activities specifically targeting rainwater drainage inlets, filters, and gradient lines. In collaboration with real estate developers and free zones, over 84,000 drainage inlets have been inspected to ensure thorough network readiness prior to and during rain.
24/7 Emergency Response Initiated
Dubai Municipality has launched a 24-hour emergency response system equipped with advanced machinery and logistical support. These teams are responsible for clearing standing water, addressing blockages, and responding to public reports. Additionally, contracts with private firms have been set up to assist with water pumping during peak rainy periods.
Eng. Adel Mohammed Al Marzouqi, Head of the Emergency, Crisis, and Disaster Management Team and CEO of the Waste and Sewerage Agency, stressed that Dubai's strategy involves engineering solutions, infrastructure enhancements, and integrated planning. He noted the importance of temporary lakes, network expansions, and multiple outfall connections in managing extreme weather without disrupting daily life.
He also pointed out that cooperation with government partners, developers, and strategic entities improves decision-making and accelerates response times. Training sessions and field drills have been conducted to ensure technical teams are prepared for changing weather conditions.
Encouraging Public Cooperation
In light of the infrastructure improvements, the municipality has carried out simulation exercises to improve communication with call centers and streamline emergency reporting. Authorities have urged residents to follow safety guidelines, refrain from unnecessary travel during adverse weather, and report any water accumulation or urgent issues through the Dubai Municipality Contact Centre at 800900 or via WhatsApp.
Residents are also encouraged to stay updated with official weather advisories issued by UAE authorities to remain informed and prepared.
