Liver Health: Dietary Tips from a Leading Specialist

Liver Health: Dietary Tips from a Leading Specialist

Post by : Saif Nasser

Prominent liver health expert, Dr. Cyriac Abby Philips, also known as “The Liver Doc,” has emphasized the importance of dietary choices for those seeking to protect their liver and mitigate the risk of fatty liver disease. His guidance comes in response to the alarming increase in liver-related health issues globally.

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports a surge in liver diseases, notably non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcohol-related liver damage. Fatty liver disease arises when excess fat accumulates in the liver and can lead to severe health complications.

Through his Instagram channel, Dr. Philips outlined essential dietary modifications, recommending a significant reduction of four specific food items: sugar-sweetened beverages, coconut oil, palm oil-based products, and dairy fats like butter and ghee. These items are high in sugars and fats, which contribute to liver deterioration over time.

He stressed the absolute necessity of avoiding alcohol, acknowledging it as a primary catalyst for liver damage, and indicated that abstaining can substantially enhance liver function.

To promote liver health, Dr. Philips advocated for the inclusion of one pivotal drink: unsweetened black coffee. He pointed out its beneficial compounds that can safeguard the liver and lower the likelihood of developing fatty liver, provided it is consumed without added sugar or cream.

Dr. Philips noted, “The four items to limit are sugar-sweetened drinks, coconut oil, palm oil products, butter, and ghee. The one thing to avoid is alcohol, while unsweetened black coffee should be included.”

Experts define fatty liver disease as a condition where fat accounts for over 5% of the liver's normal weight, often assessable via ultrasound. While it may present no symptoms initially, it can progress to pain and significant liver damage.

Fatty liver disease exists in two main forms: Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (AFLD) caused by excessive alcohol consumption, and Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), now often termed Metabolic Dysfunction Associated Steatosis Liver Disease (MASLD), primarily stemming from obesity, diabetes, or poor eating habits.

Many individuals are unaware they have fatty liver until it escalates into a more critical condition. Some may experience heaviness or discomfort in the right side of the abdomen following meals.

Health experts recommend minimizing fried foods, sugary drinks, and processed snacks while increasing the intake of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and hydration are also vital for maintaining liver health.

Dr. Philips’ insights underscore that hepatic health is closely tied to dietary practices. Simple lifestyle adjustments, such as ceasing alcohol consumption and prioritizing black coffee, can foster a healthier liver.

In conclusion, Dr. Philips stressed that awareness is crucial. Individuals should recognize the impact of their dietary choices on their overall organ health and act promptly to safeguard their well-being. With informed decisions, fatty liver disease can potentially be avoided before it escalates into a serious issue.
