On Friday night, a significant blaze ignited on a container ship docked at Los Angeles Port, leading to a swift and expansive emergency response. Numerous firefighters arrived promptly to tackle the fire, which broke out below deck and escalated to various levels of the ship. Reports also indicated a mid-deck explosion, with investigations underway to ascertain the cause.
Fortunately, all 23 crew members aboard have been safely accounted for, and there were no reported injuries. The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) revealed that the incident initially stemmed from an electrical malfunction beneath the deck. Given the presence of hazardous materials onboard, LAFD's Hazardous Materials teams are diligently monitoring the air quality around the vicinity as a precautionary measure.
The vessel, known as One Henry Hudson, spans 1,102 feet (336 meters) and is operated by One Ocean Express, a shipping line based in Singapore. Prior to its Los Angeles arrival, it made stops in Japan at Kobe, Nagoya, and Tokyo. Authorities are still investigating the fire's origin and its possible link to the ship's hazardous cargo.
By around 7 pm local time, the fire had worsened, affecting several ship levels. Over 100 firefighters, aided by specialized teams, were engaged in active firefighting efforts. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass acknowledged the serious nature of the incident and reiterated that all precautions are being taken to safeguard nearby residents and port workers.
As the busiest port in North America, the Port of Los Angeles handles millions of containers annually. The fire aboard the One Henry Hudson has caused a temporary halt in port operations, potentially impacting regional shipping and logistics. Investigators and fire officials are collecting evidence to uncover how the fire started and whether preventive measures could have been implemented.
The LAFD is collaborating with port authorities and the shipping company to ensure that firefighting efforts proceed effectively while mitigating any environmental risks posed by the ship's hazardous cargo. Officials have urged the public to steer clear of the vicinity until the situation is fully resolved.
Currently, One Ocean Express has not released any official comments regarding the incident. The investigation is ongoing, with more updates expected as information becomes available.
