The U.S. Department of Justice has unveiled shocking details about Claudio Neves Valente, the individual accused of killing two Brown University students and an MIT professor, indicating he meticulously orchestrated the attack for months.
Identified as a 48-year-old ex-Brown student and Portuguese national, Valente was discovered lifeless on December 18, shortly after a terrifying shooting spree that unsettled academic institutions throughout Massachusetts.
The tragic events began on December 13, where he opened fire in a Brown University engineering building, resulting in the deaths of two students and injuries to nine others, leading to extensive lockdowns and searches. Just two days following this, he fatally shot MIT professor Nuno F.G. Loureiro in his Brookline home.
In a search of the storage unit where Valente’s body was found, FBI agents uncovered an electronic device with several videos. In these recordings made post-attack, Valente, speaking Portuguese, openly confessed to the crimes.
Transcripts released by the DOJ indicate he had been “planning the Brown University shooting for a long time”, detailing this planning process across six academic semesters. While he did not clarify why he targeted the university or the professor, he did acknowledge a past educational connection with Loureiro.
In the videos, Valente showed no sign of remorse, asserting he had no reason to apologize due to his perception that no one had done so for him in life. He remarked on the perceived inadequacy of his attacks, stating they were “a little incompetent”, yet claimed it was better than doing nothing.
His chilling mindset illuminated further when he discussed his decision to end things on his own terms, portraying a sense of detachment and defiance towards any criticism of his actions.
Valente mentioned he had rented the storage unit for about three years, referencing a confrontation at Brown University which later became crucial for investigators. A witness, who observed him before the shooting, recognized him in police images and reported his suspicions on Reddit, which eventually led to the connection of a gray Nissan vehicle to the shooter.
In his recordings, Valente expressed surprise at the prolonged time it took for law enforcement to locate him, despite being spotted by a witness.
Having arrived in the U.S. approximately 25 years ago to pursue a physics degree at Brown, Valente left the program in 2001. He gained permanent resident status in 2017 and was last known to reside in Miami.
The videos, now part of the federal investigation's documentation, starkly reveal the mindset of an individual who meticulously plotted violence, providing his own narrative of the harrowing incidents that resulted in multiple tragedies.
