Santiago, Chile:
In a tragic turn of events, President Gabriel Boric has proclaimed a state of catastrophe in the southern areas of Ñuble and Bío Bío due to rampant wildfires that have claimed at least 18 lives and necessitated the evacuation of nearly 20,000 residents.
The Chilean forestry agency, CONAF, has reported that firefighters are currently addressing 24 active fire incidents nationwide. The most severe fires are concentrated in Ñuble and Bío Bío, situated about 500 kilometers south of Santiago, the capital.
“Given the grave nature of the ongoing wildfires, I have announced a state of catastrophe for the regions of Ñuble and Bío Bío. All available resources are being deployed,” Boric stated on X.
Authorities indicate that approximately 8,500 hectares (21,000 acres) have already been scorched, with at least 250 homes lost. Evacuation mandates are currently enforced in various communities.
Challenging weather conditions, including fierce winds and oppressive heat, have hampered firefighting efforts. In many regions of Chile, including Santiago and Bío Bío, temperatures are projected to soar to 38°C (100°F).
These wildfires occur in the wake of extreme heat waves affecting not only Chile but also Argentina, where earlier this month fires ravaged portions of Patagonia.
