Bald Eagle Shocks Driver by Dropping Cat Through Windshield on US Highway

Post by : Raina Nasser

In a startling incident on a North Carolina highway, a driver experienced a bizarre moment when a cat unexpectedly crashed through their windshield. The driver later informed 911 that a bald eagle had released the cat from above.

This incident took place on US Route 74 in Swain County, near Bryson City, adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The unusual occurrence arose on an otherwise typical morning drive, with no indication of the remarkable event about to transpire.

Audio from the 911 call reveals a bewildered driver relaying the events to the dispatcher: “You may not believe this, but a bald eagle just dropped a cat onto my windshield.” The impact shattered the glass and left the driver in disbelief.

The driver recounted how they were traveling normally when they noticed an object descending rapidly towards their vehicle. Before any reaction was possible, the cat collided with the windshield, shattering it and scattering shards inside the car. Thankfully, the driver sustained no injuries.

Attempting to support the shaken driver, the dispatcher assured them that the story was believable. A nearby witness also corroborated the event, sharing that they saw the eagle carrying the cat just before the drop, calling it “the craziest thing” they had ever witnessed while driving.

Sadly, after the fall, the cat was found on the roadside and did not survive the impact. The driver confirmed this distressing news during the call.

This extraordinary incident underscores the behavior of bald eagles, known for being powerful predators that occasionally carry prey while flying. Experts state that these birds may inadvertently release their catch if they become unbalanced, frightened, or struggle to maintain grip. In this instance, the eagle may have let go while soaring over the highway.

Such unusual episodes involving bald eagles are not unprecedented in the United States. A notable example from 2020 involved a bald eagle attacking a government drone in Michigan, damaging one of its propellers, suggesting the bird either felt threatened or mistook it for prey.

Wildlife officials report that bald eagle numbers in the United States have been on the rise, with around 316,700 bald eagles currently populating the country. Once threatened with extinction, they have rebounded significantly due to various conservation initiatives.

The unforgettable event on US Route 74 left the driver shaken, yet unharmed, marking one of the most peculiar animal-related stories to emerge in recent times.
