Tragic Avalanche Incidents in Austria Result in Eight Fatalities

Post by : Bianca Suleiman

Vienna:

On Saturday, three distinct avalanches swept through Austria, resulting in the deaths of eight skiers, as reported by local authorities. This unfortunate series of events underscores the critical avalanche danger currently present in several areas.

The initial avalanche occurred in Bad Hofgastein, where a woman was tragically buried around 12:30 p.m. at an altitude nearing 2,200 meters, according to the Pongau mountain rescue team.

Approximately 90 minutes later, another avalanche engulfed the Gastein Valley, close to Salzburg. Seven individuals were affected, with four skiers confirmed dead, two sustaining serious injuries, and one escaping unscathed.

Later that afternoon, close to 4:30 p.m., a third avalanche struck near Pusterwald in central Austria. Police reported that three Czech skiers lost their lives, while four others were successfully rescued and brought to safety.

Gerhard Kremser, head of the Pongau mountain rescue service, remarked that these tragic incidents serve as a stark reminder of the dangers presented by the ongoing conditions. He emphasized the importance of heeding the clear and repeated avalanche warnings dispatched to the public.
